Tires need to be changed for a number of reasons. More often than not, a tire may need to be changed because it has been worn out. For example, if your tread is any thinner than 1.6 millimeters, or if the tread wear indicator bars are exposed, it’s time to swap it out for a new tire. Another reason could be that your tires are vibrating.
While these things could very well be a simple alignment or balancing issue, it’s better to get it checked out in order to stay on the safe side of things. Other times the situations are a little more hazardous. For example, if you notice bulges and blisters around the tires, you should note that those tires can lead to potential blow-outs while you’re driving. Needless to say, you don’t ever want to be in that situation.
At Tire Change, we provide in-house as well as mobile services. In our shop, everything is pretty standard and gets handled as you would expect. On the road, however, it’s another story. Our trained technicians have encountered some interesting tire change scenarios that are worth remembering.
Dark and Narrow
Our team of experts encountered a challenge one late night during the winter months. The call came in, a distraught customer found themselves stranded in an alley with minimal lighting. The vehicle had gone over a ragged pothole, covered by snow, and both tires on the right side of the vehicle had been punctured.
Luckily, our team is well-equipped to handle all types of tire changes. Given the situation, not only did we come with the necessary tools and products to conduct the change, we also came with the necessary lighting to perform an excellent tire change service.
Squeezed for Space
Another situation that really tested our team’s capabilities was a tire change service we performed on the side of the highway during rush hour. Unlike the scenario above, this client had blown their tire on the highway.
Luckily, this was just before rush hour traffic, and the client managed to get to the side of the highway without additional damage to the vehicle or the vehicles surrounding them. While it wasn’t the easiest of tasks, we managed to safely change our client’s tires on the side of the highway by coming fully prepared with the tools and products needed for the service, as well as the equipment necessary to ensure everyone’s safety.
An Unexpected Puncture
Sometimes, no matter how careful you are on the road – things just happen. Even when you do your best to swerve around debris, there are instances where that’s just not possible.
An example of that was when we received a call about a punctured tire on a highway. Upon arriving on-location to perform a tire change, our team was blown away by what caused the flat tire: a deer antler. Now, it was only a portion of the entire antler, and certainly not big enough to take notice or avoid. Even then, of all the things we have seen, including nails, keys, pens, twigs, the deer antler was definitely a more memorable find.
Something else worth shining a light on when faced with a punctured tire is to never slam on the brakes. You’d be surprised at how much additional damage that can cause. Simply allow the car to slow down naturally as you steer to the side of the road. In addition, while it may be tempting to perform the tire change yourself, be mindful of your surroundings. If you’re in a low-traffic neighborhood, changing your own tires if you have the necessary tools with you may not be an issue. However, if you’re in a high-traffic area such as a highway, your best and safest bet is to call on professionals.
While unexpected situations can force you to change your tires, there are actually a plethora of reasons to do it every couple of years. Tire pressure is actually at the top of the list. An over pumped tire, or an alloy wheel leak can cause a lot of issues and can even lead to a tire blow-out. Another reason could be damage to the valve stem, which keeps the air in the tire from leaking out. A loose, clogged, or broken valve all result in a necessary tire change. Separation of the tire and rim caused by external factors such as collision with an object is another reason worth keeping in mind.
Speaking of rims, our experts at Tire Change can perform a wide range of mobile services. This includes oil changes, brake replacements, tire changes, rim repairs, as well as off-rim repairs, among many others. Our team has the ability to perform balancing and mounting anywhere you are.
