Of all your vehicle’s features and working parts, there’s no denying the importance of your tires and rims. They are the only parts of your car that are in direct contact with the road below and this is why they need to be in perfect shape. Rim damage can occur due to a number of reasons. As a driver, it’s important to know how to identify rim damage and the various signs to look out for.
Visible Damage
This is the most obvious because visible damage means that the outer part of the rim has been impacted. The rim will be dented or bent and it can clearly be seen even at a glance. Sometimes the damage is slight or on the interior of the rim which makes it more difficult or even impossible to spot right away. This is why it’s important to always take note of the other warning signs listed below.
Handling Difficulties
A damaged rim will impact the tires. When your rim is not in perfect shape, the tire will no longer fit as it should and this can cause mild to severe handling issues. If you feel like your car is not responding as it usually does when steering in either direction, it could be due to a damaged rim. Similarly, you could also notice that your braking is compromised. When the rim is damaged, the tire will no longer line up properly with the brakes. So, while the brakes are perfectly fine, they are not making proper contact with the tire and this compromises braking. If you apply the brakes abruptly, you may notice your car pulling to one side and this is a common sign of a damaged rim.
Vibrations While Driving
Normal rims and tires make proper contact with the road as the driver is travelling. The rim is round which means that the tire fits correctly and you enjoy a smooth ride. When the rim is bent or damaged, it is no longer perfectly round and the tire does not fit right either. Every time the damaged portion comes into contact with the road below, it will send a vibration up through the rest of the vehicle. Most notably, you will feel this vibration in the steering wheel and even in the driver’s seat. It is also most noticeable when steering your car left or right.
Loss of Tire Pressure
As a driver, it is essential that you take the time to inspect your vehicle regularly. As soon as you notice the loss of tire pressure, it’s a good idea to inspect the rim or have it checked by a professional. The loss of pressure is due to the fact that the tire does not fit the bent rim perfectly and this allows air to escape. There could be absolutely nothing wrong with the tire itself. However, due to the bent rim, your tire will suffer too.
Driving your vehicle with a damaged rim is dangerous and should be avoided no matter what. With compromised road handling and a loss of tire pressure, it’s easy for accidents and blowouts to occur.
